At the request of the organizing committee of the Twentieth International Congress of Vexillology, Marcia Vexillum was composed by Harry Sernklef, former director of music for the Band of the Swedish Home Guard (Jönköping-Huskvarna). Mr. Sernklef graciously dedicated the march to FIAV, which was first publicly performed on July 28, 2003 at the Congress in Stockholm by the Dragoon Trumpeters of the Royal Life Guards.

	Marcia Vexillum is played during the opening and closing ceremonies of an International Congress of Vexillology or another international vexillological event organized or attended by FIAV. It may be played at national and other vexillological events organized by the FIAV members following the local customs.
